Direct injection with supplemental port injection, compression ratio, better flowing heads, and a superior intake manifold makes for a combination that produces way more than advertised.
We were duly impressed, but we still wanted to know how previous Coyote intakes stacked up; was the newest version of the Coyote intake really the best? Let's take a look at what else is available. Before the Gen 3 Coyote existed, there was one manifold that reigned supreme over all others: the Cobra Jet. Engineered from the Boss manifold that came to life seven years ago, technology has evolved substantially since then.
The became the first Ford composite intake manifold to use hot gas welding in place of vibration welding, yielding a lighter part with no contamination. Another improvement came in the form of charge motion control valves CMCV with a stainless-steel shaft, incorporating the shaft sensor into shaft actuators. In the 1D world they can change the dimensions very easily and if it looks good, run an analysis in the 3D world. Ford engineers took the lessons they learned from the GT manifold and applied it to thewhich included lowered runners for a low-profile hood, up tilted throttle body for fitment, reduced bell mouth opening cross sectional area for better torque and reduced overall volume to fit the smaller 5-liter displacement.
The runner length for a '17 manifold was designed for a 7,rpm peak, so the runners are effectively shorter and larger in diameter. That whole program came together very fast and the manifold was effective. Also going from an 80mm to 87mm throttle body was a big help. Almost everything is born from evolution. Ford's manifold was modeled off the GT just how the Cobra Jet was derived from the Boss manifold.
Ideally, we wanted the runners on the Boss to be a bit longer to lower the peak engine speed the manifold is tuned for a 7, rpm power peakbut packaging the carryover GT fuel rails and the assembly of the rails meant we couldn't push the runner length and the plenum out any further than we did.
The Boss intake manifold was Ford Performance's first manifold offered for the Coyote platform, which debuted on the Roadrunner 5.
It was designed to give the factory-fortified Boss another 1, rpm of operating range for a more dynamic powerband when road racing. Again, the plenum design is quite similar to the GT, but flipped over; if you were to straighten the GT runners so they fed straight in to the plenum, you'd see that the design is pretty similar to the Boss. The Cobra Jet intake manifold has been long regarded as the best Ford Performance manifold on the market.
But now with the manifold available, how does it compare? Six years of evolution and technology is a dramatic difference in time but does the Cobra Jet still have what it takes to keep the top spot? With the combination of a huge air inlet and short runners, the Cobra Jet manifold will show the best peak gains out of any Ford Performance manifold.
Both throttle bodies come with an adapter pigtail that will swap pin-for-pin with the stock throttle body connector, or you can use a plug-and-play harness like what's offered by JMS Chip, which we also used to convert the analog to digital signal on our GT throttle body.
Enough of the jibber-jabber. How'd the manifolds perform?It is a composite design that has become mainstream today because it is both lighter and a great heat insulator. It stays cool and keeps the intake charge cooler.
It is also easier to manufacture. Induction design and tuning has changed considerably thanks to computer-aided design and a lot of midnight oil at Ford.
These are long, They are scrolled deep into the valley to allow for a lower hoodline. The mm throttle body is centered at the front of the engine on top. Another great evolution is a digital mass air sensor for extremes of fine-tuning as you drive. A lot of development work is yet to be done before Coyote receives direct injection.
The ultimate factory Coyote could be considered one with Ecoboost. The Coyote is available with two basic types of induction packages: conventional single-plane long runner — and Charge Motion Control Valve — that allows you to change intake runner length via flapper valves, thereby improving idle and low-end performance quality.
However, optional factory and aftermarket manifolds are engineered to make it better. Edelbrock appears to be the front-runner with a new aftermarket intake manifold for the Coyote; other aftermarket companies are following suit.

Function is very simple with little more than the throttle body, non-return fuel system, and the evaporative emissions canister purge control valve arrow. What makes the — intake manifold different from —up is the absence of CMCV and vacuum actuators. This makes the — manifold simple in scope and function compared to —up. Behind it is the evaporative emissions purge valve arrow. The key to success is smooth throttle tip-in. Ford made significant changes to Coyote induction for —up with CMCV, which varies the length of the intake runners to improve low-end performance and idle quality.
CMCV and the new up Coyote cylinder head are a married package, meaning that they were designed for each other.
The —up head has extended intake port flanges designed to accommodate the CMCV intake manifold. These are the Charge Motion Control Valve actuators at the back of the manifold. Two actuators left bank and right bank control the Charge Motion flapper valves. They function primarily at low RPM ranges for improved torque and idle quality. The Coyote has a non-return electronic fuel injection system, which means no return line back to the fuel tank.

Parallel to its run in the Mustang, the Coyote is also an optional powerplant in the sales-leading F Junkyard Dogs. Clearly, the most cost-effective option to put a Coyote under the hood of your car is a used engine. We did a quick internet search on Car-part. With that in mind, you might immediately make a move for an F Coyote.
Be warned, however, there are some differences between the engines. Ford tailored the F Coyote for the kind of grunt it would need in a truck application, so there are obvious external differences, including a truck-specific intake manifold, cast-iron exhaust manifolds and a front-mounted engine oil cooler.
Even the timing covers are a bit different, with the F unit featuring less ribbing and locating the alternator a bit more outward. In stock form they are awesome motors. The newer engine features bigger valves, upgraded cams, stiffer valvesprings, and new cylinder heads with improved ports and combustion chambers. Likewise, this engine is filled with new pistons with valve reliefs compatible with the larger valves and a forged crank better suited for higher RPM.
Crate Expectations. Odds are if you are perusing this page that you want more performance than a stock engine has to offer.
As such, you might consider doing some upgrades while you are at it — like billet oil pump gears, a better flowing intake, etc. There is another option if you have the funds, and that is a new engine. Whether that is a fresh crate engine from Ford Racing Performance Parts or a built motor from an aftermarket supplier, there are plenty of robust Coyote variants available these days; from robust short-blocks to fully built and blown engines, there is a powerplant for your project.
